Introducing... Yelle

Yelle

Right now, we just can’t get enough of single-minded girls boasting shiny pop tunes, great moves, style and attitude. From old-school-ers like Robyn and MIA to the new wave of Lykke Li, Santogold and the Cocknbullkid, the list can now make room to include French singer Yelle .

This is what we know about Yelle so far. Her name is based on an acronym for "You Enjoy Life". Either that, or “Yeah!” and “Elle” joined together. Her bandmates - one on laptop and decks, one on drums - are wearing fantastic, dripping-blood style “Dance or Die” tee’s. All of which means we know there’s no chance we’re in for a spell of feeling gloomy when we decide to see her live.

Yelle bounds onstage and spends the night strutting, dancing and posing like a real pin-up icon. She’s in what looks like a blue sequined matador jacket, which later gives way to reveal an amazing Japanese dress. She’s sure got style, so it’s no surprise that her music’s already been used at catwalk shows.

The boys strike up tongue-in-cheek diss song “À Cause Des Garçons” and its squelchy bass and gleaming keyboards prove instantly catchy with the up-for-it crowd. From there on, it’s a full-tilt ride through trashy electro and hard-edged dance-pop, which the French keep showing us they do so well.

The singer and her production whizzkid, DJ Grandmarnier, use cheeky 80s synths to thrillingly modern effect. Her DIY punk take on techno, rap and pop blends genres like CSS ambushing Girls Aloud at a Miami bass night. Best of all, you’d only know if it you speak French, but her lyrics are full of brilliantly sleazy digs at boys and knowing winks to the girls.

Go grab debut album “Pop Up” and get addicted.

  • i saw her when she supported mika at one his gigs and i didnt really think much of her music really. for one thing she sings all of them (ALL of them) in french - i knnow she is french but this was a gig in london so she might have sung at least one in english - and lots of them sounded the same. but she did look good. :)
