Live Review: McFly at Shepherd's Bush Empire
"We're a bit sweaty and out of practice, so you'll have to give us a small hand on the singing of this one..." smirked Danny as the four piece launched into "All About You" at London's Shepherds Bush Empire. Needless to say, we didn't disappoint, belting it out so loud that even security people seemed surprised at just how loud we could be.
McFly have just been recording their shiny new album, Radio:Active in Australia, and this was the first chance for them to air the fruits of their labour on home turf. They may have had most of this year off, but that didn't mean that they took it slowly, oh no. Opening with their new single, "One for the Radio", they mixed the old classics with the new tunes, which already sound like they're going to be on your radio for years to come.
Between song banter provided moments of respite from a sweaty and pushy crowd, as Tom revealed that Danny believed that sperm donors were paid £50,000, much to Danny's embarrassment at his own stupidity. Throughout the evening it was clear that they're pretty good mates off stage as well as on, gently teasing Dougie's dust allergies which were blamed on him messing up a few of the newer songs. Tom wasn't left alone either, having a scarily high chorus on new song "Do Ya?", which featured everyone giggling at just how high his voice went.
In between new songs, such classics as "Star Girl" and "Obviously" were wheeled out, ensuring that those with short attention spans were kept entertained. Rounding off with the innovatively named "Last Song" from their new album, it starts as a slow ballad, before going into full-on McFly rock out session, which pleased everyone.
However, they'd forgotten one song. One song that they've performed at every gig since they've started, and one they just couldn't leave out. Yes, it was "Five Colours In Her Hair", which they came back to do and managed to keep it sounding as fresh as the day they first penned it, now over four years ago, believe it or not. And with a final flourish, four rather sweaty guys left the stage, ready to take over the UK with some more infectious tunes once again.
