Review: The Music live in Liverpool

The Music

Confusingly named Leeds quartet, The Music are back on the scene after a 3 year break with new album 'Strength In Numbers . Produced by Flood and Paul Hartnoll of Orbital fame it seems their break has been used to fully prepare for the brilliance of their current music. By creating something strikingly original and extremely likeable within this album the tremendous support at their recent gig at Liverpool Carling Academy proved that it has been very well received.

Opening with their 2001 debut single 'Take The Long Road And Walk It' , their beats are painfully infectious and it's very hard to avoid at least tapping your foot or nodding your head along with the high energy drums. On bass Stu Coleman is an absolute animal, his playing is reverend, solid and when teamed with drummer Phil they create what has to be one of the best rhythm sections going. Adam Nutter's guitar unmercifully growls, releasing sounds that are almost hypnotic and riffs that are overwhelmingly impressive. As for front man Rob Harvey, his presence was subtle but it was very hard to take your eyes off him - his eyes closed for the majority of the gig like he was in some spiritual state and his voice almost dragging you towards him. Totally absorbing, their music is highly charged, original rock yet with undeniable funk, a funk that flings your arms in the air and hips from side to side.

The gig on the whole was very impressive and left everyone in the room open mouthed smiling and sweating from the constant dancing, shouting and singing. They adored Rob, even though he didn't really say much to his audience but he didn't need to, the music did all the talking and it talked loud, clear and brilliantly.
