Review: Lykke Li & Sebastien Tellier

Sebastien Tellier

It must be weird being Lykke Li . All the cool bloggers are saying you're the next big Scando-pop sensation, but when you play a live show they just stand around nattering. "You can dance if you want to!" pleads Lykke but everyone here is too hip to shake their booty.

It's a pity, 'cos with haunting songs like 'Little Bit' and her perky new single 'I'm Good I'm Gone' Lykke's shows she definitely has what it takes to be the indie Robyn. Sounding a bit more rock-y live than she does on her myspace , she's dressed all in black like her band and impresses with her ability to smack a cymbal with one-handed while singing. These bloggers could definitely be on to something.

Everyone's really waiting for Sebastien Tellier, the beardy French electro/rock/lounge dude who's worked with Daft Punk and always wears big sunglasses. When he first comes on stage it's hard to tell if he's just one of the roadies, 'til he fetches a Persil-white suit jacket and starts seducing us with some hypnotic grooves.

There's a massive cheer when he plays 'Divine' - hilariously it's France's Eurovision entry - singing the English lyrics despite the rollicking his countrymen given him for not singing in le Francais. For the encore his band play the lucious 'Sexual Sportswear' but Sebastien only shows up half way through to moan and groan in a way that would make Prince blush. It's fun if slightly ramshackle - he'll have to get some practice if he wants to avoid getting nil points next month.
