Review: Jonas Brothers Live
Sibling acts are always rather unnerving: The Jackson Five, The Osmonds and Hanson to name but a few. The Jonas Brothers are no exception - they're scarily young, scarily talented and have scarily big hair. The New Jersey boys have already done well in the US and are now attempting to conquer the hearts of British teens. They made a promising start at their first UK gig at the Islington Academy in London, which sold out and featured hordes of girls chanting “Jonas, Jonas”. The band – Kevin, 20, Joe, 18, and Nick 15 – are wholesome fellows. Why else tone down the pupil-teacher relationship in their cover of Busted’s 'What I Go to School For' to a crush on a girl “in senior class”?
Thankfully, they didn’t play that at this gig instead powering through a polished set of their own catchy pop-rock songs and heartfelt ballads, including their debut UK single 'S.O.S' plus a crowd-pleasing cover of A-ha’s 'Take on Me' . So what if the lyrics are generic boyband? There were no duff numbers and it’s easy to see why they could take off over here with a forthcoming tour with Avril Lavigne and an album due out in June.
However, if they’re really to win over British pop fans, they need to work on their stage banter. Kevin tried his best to connect with the London audience by mentioning the local cuisine – meat pie and jellied eels. He really seemed to think that’s what we eccentric English folk have for dinner most days, bless him.
